Medieval tabard

The top part and back of this item are covered with deep wine red velvet.  The sections at the front of the costume are made of assorted fabrics (including a dyed hessian), these decorative panels have been naively over sewn to give it a hand made appearance.  The sides of the tabard are laced together with long brown shoe laces through eyelets.

This Medieval Tabard was worn by Whoopi Goldberg in  1998 TV Film adaptation of Mark Twain’s A Connecticut Yankee at King Arthur’s Court.
