As Worn In: A Bridge Too Far

German Camo Smock

This German style cammo smock is made of a reversible fabric; take a look at the detail photo showing the cloth folded over to show both sides in one image; note the curious 14 that appears at regular intervals throughout the fabric design.  The fabric is known as a Jigsaw cammo and has a waterproofed finish.  This fabric is actually a post-war design but it is likely that budget and time constraints meant that the designer or the makers settled on this cloth to expedite production.

The garment has pocket slits above the beltline on both sides; these slits have no pocket attached so that the pockets of the garment worn under the smock can be accessed.  There is a drawstring at the waist and the cuffs have elastcated sections to pull them in at the wrist, although over time the elastic has lost some of its stretch qualities.

A Bridge Too far is one of the greatest films made with an ensemble cast depicting the flawed Operation Market Garden to take the Bridges of Holland in 1944; the film was released in 1977.
